Judge Mladic says acquittal still possible
THE HAGUE – Acquittal is still possible for the former Serbian general Ratko Mladic.
That says Judge Alphons Orie in an interview in the Dutch Reformed Daily this Friday. From next week Judge Orie presides the Mladic case at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
The former Dutch top judge says that he has „not much time” for a justice procedure that „only ends in conviction”.
It’s only at the process that the strength of the charge comes out. „If the evidence is not convincing, acquittal and release must follow.”
In 2008 Mr Orie acquitted the Kosovar Albanian Haradinaj.
In the interview Orie doesn’t respond to the Mladic case, who is charged with war crimes and genocide at the Bosnian population in Srebrenica.
He doesn’t want to speak about conviction on beforehand. „Conviction or acquittal will only follow at the end of the proceedings.”
Judge Orie works from 2001 at the ICTY. Before he worked as judge at the Supreme Court of the Netherlands and as an attorney.
